During the July 4th weekend, devastating flash floods struck Central Texas as the Guadalupe River rapidly rose due to heavy overnight rains. The floodwaters swept through Kerr County, destroying homes and causing widespread tragedy. Among those affected was 21-year-old Joyce Badon, who was staying at a country house along the river with friends Ella Cahill, Reese Manchaca, and Aiden Heartfield.
Joyce sent a final heartbreaking text message to her family saying, “we’re being washed away,” moments before the floodwaters overwhelmed their home. The group’s last contact was during a phone call with Aiden’s father, in which Aiden said he needed to help Ella and Reese just before the call abruptly ended.
